CO₂ neutrality (also known as climate neutrality) describes the state in which the CO₂ emissions caused by human activity are completely offset, either through avoidance, reduction or compensation. The aim is to no longer cause net greenhouse gas emissions and thus contribute to mitigating climate change.
Measures to achieve CO₂ neutrality include energy-efficient processes, the use of renewable energies, the electrification of production and transportation processes and investments in climate protection projects (e.g. reforestation or CO₂ storage). In companies, products or entire factories, CO₂ neutrality is often seen as a milestone on the way to a climate-friendly, sustainable way of doing business, for example as part of ESG strategies or carbon footprints.
