ROI-EFESO presents the winners of the INDUSTRIE 4.0 AWARD 2023
Munich, February 2, 2024 - The winners of the INDUSTRIE 4.0 AWARD 2023 are the Steyr plant of BMW Group AG, the production site of Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) in Ningde, China, and the online manufacturer FACTUREE. The prestigious industry award has been presented by the operations consultancy ROI-EFESO for pioneering solutions in industrial digitalization since 2013.
From numerous international applications, the INDUSTRIE 4.0 AWARD jury selected the three winners for 2023 in the categories "Discrete Manufacturing", "Process Industry" and "Manufacturing Platform". The jury panel of renowned decision-makers from the industry makes its choice based on anonymized project presentations, so that all companies applying for the award have the same starting conditions and opportunities.
Efficiency as a course objective
The spectrum of applications was dominated by the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and the resource-efficient alignment of value creation processes. Many companies are applying self-developed AI tools, ranging from highly specialized, plant-related individual solutions to scalable, machine- and product-independent applications.
Regardless of the technologies used, the Industry 4.0 pioneers are united by the fact that they promote intensive collaboration between all areas of operations – with the aim of continuously developing new ways to increase efficiency.

BMW Group AG / Steyr plant wins in the "Discrete Manufacturing" category
Around every second new BMW Group vehicle sold has a drive system from the Group's largest engine plant in Steyr, Austria. "In the digital transformation, we are not only focusing on the production areas – we want to involve as many employees as possible and enable them to use new technologies," says Dr. Werner Schröder, Head of Planning Engine Assembly, Electric Drive Unit at BMW Group Plant Steyr.
The plant receives the INDUSTRIE 4.0 AWARD 2023 in the "Discrete Manufacturing" category for a pioneering Industry 4.0 solution that orchestrates around 200 technologies and uses its own scalable AI application for quality control. In addition, all employees and levels are empowered to use the tools and to use data in a value-added manner in line with the digital transformation.
CATL / Ningde plant awarded in the "Process Industry" segment
As the Chinese market leader in the production of lithium-ion batteries, Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) is one of the ten largest automotive suppliers in the world. In line with the technological innovations of Industry 4.0, the company has been systematically building intelligent factories since it was founded in 2011.
The CATL plant in Ningde (China) receives the INDUSTRIE 4.0 AWARD 2023 in the "Process Industry" category. The award-winner's solution combines several elements to realize efficient processes in production and other operational areas. Highlights include an AI-controlled process control system for coating battery cells and an intelligent logistics system with 5G connected AGVs.
"Manufacturing Platform" award goes to FACTUREE
The online manufacturer FACTUREE digitizes the procurement process for drawing parts. To this end, the Berlin-based company has built up an extensive production network of around 2,000 manufacturing partners from almost all areas of production technology, with whom prototyping projects can be realized as well as small and large series production.
FACTUREE was awarded the INDUSTRIE 4.0 AWARD 2023 in the "Manufacturing Platform" category for this pioneering digitalization solution. In addition to the production network with around 15,000 machines, the solution's special features include its own pricing algorithm and the assignment of the ideal manufacturing partner according to the customer's preferences.
"We are delighted to receive this prestigious award. Our company started in 2017 as a real early mover in the DACH region from the living room and coined the term ‘online manufacturing’. Today, FACTUREE has an eight-figure turnover – without investors," says Benjamin Schwab, Co-Founder and CMO at FACTUREE.
